Coming Up… School Library Monthly, September/October 2010

School Library Monthly (SLM)
Formerly School Library Media Activities Monthly (SLMAM)

School Library Monthly has several changes in the column lineup this volume. With the retirement of our longtime authors Carolyn Brodie and Greg Byerly, we are adding new voices and themes to the magazine. We are also moving from ten issues to eight and full-color layout. The magazines received, starting with this volume, will be September/October, November through April, and May/June. We are also reducing the number of printed pages for the Activities Almanac while posting the full content on the SLM Web site each issue. This allows us to print an additional column each month.

Check out our new columns:

  • Connections will focus on Professional Learning Networks (PLNs) and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and how they benefit school librarians.
  • Get a Perspective will discuss the state of school libraries today from the perspective of people within and from outside the field.
  • Literature and Life is a new column with instructional connections to literature and supports various dispositions useful in literature circles.
  • Online with Primary Sources addresses the use of online primary sources for inquiry.

Enjoy these columns, extended to full-time:

  • Launching Library 2.0+ will continue to look at Web 2.0 tools that school librarians should be familiar with and use for instruction and professional development—it will be extended to a full-time column.
  • Taking the Lead, addressing issues of leadership for the school librarian, will be extended to a full-time column.

Blog with SLM:

  • We will continue the focus on inquiry instruction via the blog. Be part of the discussion and join Kristin Fontichiaro on the SLM blog: http://blog.schoollibrarymonthly.com. Find out more about the themes for “Nudging Toward Inquiry” on our Web site (http://www.schoollibrarymonthly.com/pdf/SLMNudging.pdf).

Take advantage of the newly updated School Library State by State Certification (http://www.schoollibrarymonthly.com/cert/index.html).
